The Heavenly Counsel of God

Spirit School

As children of our Father in heaven, we inherit his characteristics and nature through Jesus Christ. We have been born again and given royal identity as beloved sons and daughters, yet inheritance into the courts of God, his most intimate dwelling place, is not enough for the intimacy that God desires. God calls us into a deep friendship with him, elevating us above the role of servant, or slave in his Kingdom, and establishing us as his closest counsel, as a friend.

As we walk in the counsel of God we become familiar with his voice, his heart and his intention. To walk in his counsel is to walk as a friend where there is no fear of rejection, no fear of abandonment and no fear of being left outside. In his counsel, we are united in the spirit of God. His thoughts, the mind of Christ, are as one with our thoughts as we are one in spirit with the Lord, in his counsel we receive the higher wisdom of Jesus Christ into our spirit.

Walking in the counsel of God is something as a human race, we were designed to do. One of the first things God did after he created Adam, was to co-work with Adam in naming the creatures God had made (Genesis 2:20). From our Father in Heaven, every family on Earth and in heaven has received its name (Ephesians 3:15), but every creature on Earth received its name as a result of Adam’s cooperative work with God.

As a pattern that God established from the beginning, he wants us to work with him and know his voice. The heart of Jesus Christ was to delegate his supernatural authority to us (John 20:21, Revelation 2:26 - 27). When he ascended on high, he gave us his spirit so that his power would work in us, and impact the world around us (Luke 24:48-49).

Through our co-labouring with Jesus Christ, we have the privilege of working with God to bring into effect and reign his Kingdom.

For most Christians this is done through everyday living, in accordance with Kingdom of God principles and characteristics. Showing love to our neighbour, taking care of those in need, standing up for what is right and continually praying for those who need prayer.

The seer and those whom God has gifted to walk with eyes open to the spirit realm, enter into a different dynamic. They are able to see with spirit-eyes, what is currently happening in the spirit realm and “see” what God is doing.

Counsel in the Spirit Realm

The seer often operates midway between the Earthly realm and the heavenly realm. It is their function to perceive spiritual reality, having learned and matured through practice of their gift, and relay information to the church who can put it into effect in the natural realm. They may also work in spirit along with the angelic beings in heaven realms (discussed below), and so advance the rule and reign of Jesus Christ.

Personal Testimony

When I visited a friend who works in an ancient Christian site, I was able to see an angel. So I approached the angel and asked him what he was reading. The angel showed me the book he had in his hands and told me the book contained every event that had happened on site. I asked the angel if I could see Father’s intention for the future of the site and the angel turned the page.

I looked into the pages of the book and relayed to my friend, who worked on site, what the angel showed me. My friend confirmed what I had seen in the book described the current situation on site, and also a future hope.

There are many beings who are involved in God’s counsel, most of them are angelic angels. The counsel of God is made up of various beings and each of them have different functions. In 1 Kings 22:19 we see a dialogue between God and the host of heaven, which in the Hebrew language is called the army of heaven, who fill the scene, on both sides of the throne of God.

The appearance of the heavenly creatures varies. Some look like machines, the wheels within wheels as described by Ezekiel are a good example of this. Some angelic beings ride chariots, and some chariots do not have a rider, only horses made of fire that pull them along (2 Kings 2:11). Some angels ride on what look like winds and some look like winds (Psalm 104:3), others ride on what look like boats or other creatures. Some of the designs of the heavenly machines are fantastical and beyond imagination.

Some angelic creatures have four faces on one head, and others have what looks like a human body with a face that looks like an animal (Ezekiel 1:5-11). Some creatures have faces so bright, they literally look like a ball of light while others appear as balls of different coloured light. Some have ribbons of spirit around them that emanate sparkles of light, which look like dust or the effects of fireworks that have exploded, causing sparkles to shimmer off them as they walk along.

Personal Testimony

On one occasion an angel transported me in a boat around various heavenly places. The boat had wings, which looked like they were made from gold and metal, yet they moved as easily as the wings of a bird. It was during that visitation that I met Gabriel when he showed me a scroll with angelic language on it.

When we enter into the counsel of God, we may find ourselves entering into dialogue with various spiritual beings. God loves to include all of his subjects of his Kingdom in his decisions, and entrusts them to effect his will. This may seem counter-church doctrine, because we have been taught God does all things by his spirit, yet it is completely biblical.

Consider the birth of Jesus Christ. It was announced by angels, who appeared to shepherds and wise men. Gabriel appeared to Mary and waited for her response and agreement before the Holy Spirit overshadowed her. The Lord could have appeared to Mary in a vision, but God chose to work with his angels.

The Old Testament prophets often saw visions and interacted with what they called “The Word of the Lord”, which means the spoken voice of God, but in various examples we see them interacting with spiritual beings.

When God brings a seer into his counsel within the heavenly realms, the seer is brought into the operation of heaven, which is run by spiritual beings under the rule of God.

The normal experience for someone who has the spiritual gift of “seeing” the spirit realm, is to interact with God’s angels. My experience often involves being met by an angel in a dream, or being aware of spiritual beings around me and understanding who they are, or being translated into a heavenly realm and dialoguing with them or Jesus Christ. The seer can understand why spiritual beings are present in the Earthly realm where I am, and what they are doing because of the spiritual gift.

God takes great joy in angels and the church working together, because the family in heaven (the angelic beings) and those on Earth (humanity) take their name from our Father in Heaven. One of the works of the Holy Spirit is unity within the body of Christ, and as the angels are commissioned for the sake of those who will inherit salvation, it is right for the body of Christ to acknowledge their existence and part to play in the Kingdom of God.

The work of the Holy Spirit brings the church into unity and can unify us with the operation of the angelic realm, under the will of God. Together we are powerful in that we submit to the will of God our Father, and operate in accordance with what he is doing.

Talking With Angels

Many angels are all around us, all of the time and some people are gifted to see them, others to speak with them. Some people, by faith, interact and engage with them. When we engage with the counsel of God, it is natural to start to interact with angelic beings. Even the Apostles were guided by angels, some had interactions with them while others were given instructions and guidance from them alongside what the Lord Jesus Christ had revealed to them (Acts 27:23-24).

If we are to engage with angels, the first thing to remember is we can not command them or tell them what to do. God commands his angels according to scripture, not humans. (I have seen people command spirits, but spirits who yield to the command of humans are not subject to the Kingdom of God.) Only those who are subject to the Kingdom of God will subject themselves first and foremost to our Father in Heaven.

When we interact with angels, if they ask for help or need assistance, we can pray and ask God for a blessing or ask him for specific help if the angel has made clear what they need. We can ask an angel to do something, if it is according to Father’s will but we can not command an angel to go here, there or anywhere.

Scripturally, the command of angels is limited to God alone (Psalm 91:11, Luke 4:10, Numbers 20:16, Daniel 3:28, Daniel 6:22, Acts 12:11). In most of the examples in these scriptures, the people involved did not command the angels to rescue them but were almost surprised when the angels turned up. They recognised God heard their cries, or saw their situations, and sent angels to them.

The secret to getting angelic interaction in our lives is to go to our Father in heaven and seek his counsel. We can recognise and honour the presence of angels with us, if we sense them, but to get them to act on our behalf is something God has already commanded of them. So then to interact with them there are several keys:

1. Ask them about their assignment or commission from our Father in heaven.

This immediately puts us in the right heart-position before our Father in Heaven. It also tests the spirits, for many will come masquerading as angels of light but are actually agents of Satan. So be on your guard if you should start detecting an angelic presence - always be sure the angel is from God. If it is and you do not interact with, God’s word will still be fulfilled.

2. Bless them in their assignment according to the will of God our Father.

To do this, we might need to get to know our scriptures better so that we can measure and weigh anything an angel reveals to us, against the word of God. Then, if what they have revealed falls in line with God’s nature and character, we can bless it.

3. Ask God to send them light, to make his face shine upon them.

Moses recognised that unless the Lord went with him, it was stupid to continue onwards. He knew without God, he would not be successful. So it is with us and angels, without God, both of our efforts are meaningless. We need his light and power (John 14:14).

4. Finally, do not command them.

It is Jesus who will do anything we ask in his name (John 14:14), so it is not our place to command angels, but to enquire of the Father’s will. If they show us what God’s will is and how it relates to their presence, then we can either pray into that or seek God for further revelation from the Holy Spirit. We can begin dialoguing with the angel to find out more information, but whatever revelation and information they give us needs to be measured against the truth of God.
