The Voice Of Jesus

Spirit School

Jesus is our life-giving spirit (1 Corinthians 15:45) and relates to us in ways of spirit. The Holy Spirit abides within us but when we spend time communing with God, something in the spirit realm shifts. As we choose to rend our hearts toward God, the presence of the Kingdom of God increases around us. It is like having a dimmer switch and by choosing to intently commune with our Father in heaven (being mindful of his presence) we turn on the dimmer switch to a brighter intensity and the spirit realms in our vicinity, become flooded with light.

In Hebraic understanding, communing with God is likened to inviting a friend around for dinner. While in each other’s personal space, friends get to know one another through relationship. Just as Jesus described in the book of Revelation (3:20), God wants to eat with us, or rather relate to us in a similar vein. In other words, God wants to get into our personal space! He longs for us to know him inside and out. It goes deeper still: in John’s gospel, Chapter 14 verse 23 Jesus says him and the Father will make a home in us, they will make a permanent abode within us.

Our Father in heaven, along with Jesus, has made you and I a permanent abode, permanently in our space.

When we commune with God, we focus and tune our spirit into Jesus, who is dwelling within us. We can commune with God in various ways, such as prayer, meditation, worship, contemplative methods or otherwise. Each method is akin to inviting Jesus around for dinner for a one on one meal and getting to know each other, and he is so eager to come in (Rev 3:20).

Recognising The Voice Of Jesus

As Jesus is constantly in our personal space, relating to us in spirit, so he is constantly communicating in spirit. How can we recognise his spirit voice?

We see a fundamental principle in the book of Genesis. When God acts he speaks. The voice of God creates and gives life. The Bible says that the spirit of life, the same spirit that spoke and created the universe, lives within us (Romans 8:11). So by his voice, which is his spirit, God speaks to us every day. This is not reserved for those with the gift of prophecy, this is the reality for every born again believer!

Jesus is always speaking to us in spirit and we can become familiar with his voice, just as he said that his sheep recognise his voice. As we spend time communing with God, our spirit becomes familiar with his presence and voice, which is the voice of Jesus.

We may be used to thinking of the spirit of God as Holy Spirit, and this is perfectly inline with the Holy Bible. Do we also think of the spirit of God as Jesus himself, the life giving spirit who dwells within us?

God the Son (Jesus Christ), God the Father and God the Holy Spirit are one, united which remains a mystery to many. Recognising the presence of God is akin to recognising the voice of Jesus, for his presence and his voice carry the same “fingerprint”, or rather “spirit print”. Only through practice of discerning his voice can we mature and be able to recognise him quickly.
